It is very common for women (and men) to have some difference between the size and shape of each breast. Each side of our body and face are slightly unique and our breasts aren’t any different. While many minor cases of breast asymmetry do exist and are tolerable, more severe and obvious abnormalities of breast asymmetry can sadly cause a lot of psychological stress and severely impact a patient’s self esteem for decades. Over the years, plastic surgery has fortunately progressed rapidly to offer real and safe solutions that inevitably improve patients’ quality of life. One of these revolutionary procedures is known as Breast Asymmetry Correction.

While sounding fairly straightforward, the procedure can be more accurately described as a combination of breast augmentation surgeries that improve the symmetry and balance of a patient’s chest via tailored techniques and complimentary practices. As always, this procedure will require patients to attentively research the credentials, history and before and after photos of their chosen plastic surgeon as their results depend wholly on the surgeon’s skill and experience. Elements Spa’s board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar has developed the artistry and techniques necessary to carry out numerous successful Breast Asymmetry Corrections yearly, and is happy to answer any questions in relation to this corrective procedure. Let’s discuss the surgery in more detail.

Each and every individual is unique, and therefore it’s important to understand that Breast Asymmetry Correction can never be carried out in textbook or cookie-cutter fashion. During the initial consultation, Dr. Adibfar will examine a patient’s breasts while listening attentively and asking his patient what their desired shape, size and outcome would be. As mentioned earlier, because each patient is different, they will have different concerns and require varying procedures depending on their requests. Some patients may find that one breast is noticeably larger than the other breast, which appears to the patient as their ideal size. Another patient may carry one breast that hangs excessively, while the other never managed to develop at all. A patient may experience that the shape of their breasts vary greatly, or even that the size, shape and placement of their nipples and areola’s differ significantly. For these reasons and many more, a patient will likely require a combination of procedures to achieve an improved look that appears as symmetrical as possible via surgical methods.

These various abnormalities or concerns require a customized combination of breast augmentation surgeries. A patient may favour one breast and consider it the ideal shape and size for Dr. Adibfar to best create balance with. In any case, a patient may require a reduction in a larger breast, as well an implant in a smaller or volume-less breast, change to the placement and size of the patient’s nipple as well areola, and possibly a breast lift. Dr. Adibfar will need to correct differences in volume, shape, size, contour, as well as position. A patient may also desire to have a different sized implant placed in each breast to increase them both in size along with any other tailored corrections. Before the procedure, Dr. Adibfar will relay all information about the procedure’s specifics and what the patient can realistically expect post surgery once their body has fully recovered. As with any surgical procedure, Dr. Adibfar shows his patients what they can expect referring to scar placement and visibility. Incision lines do fade overtime and Dr. Adibfar always allows for placement in least visible areas so scars are well concealed and easily hidden. As previously mentioned, because Breast Asymmetry Correction is a customized procedure, scar placement will vary and depend on the case at hand. After the procedure, Dr. Adibfar will apply dressings to the area which are typically worn for 3-4 days. Patients will experience swelling which reduces significantly within and after one week when any stitches are removed.

Breast Asymmetry Correction is one of the most rewarding areas of plastic surgery. Patients are more self-confident as they feel more comfortable and look better in their clothes without having the feeling of needing to disguise the breasts they were previously embarrassed about. Patients happily report that they enjoy the warmer months and vacations as they feel great wearing bathing suits and are relieved to know that they can happily wear more revealing clothing should they want to. We’re very fortunate that we exist during a time where solutions to these psychologically devastating issues can be addressed safely with the help and diligence of experienced board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeons like Toronto’s own Dr. Adibfar.
