There are fundamental differences in a female versus a male’s body and the buttock region is no exception. While most women desire a more curved bottom that projects through wider hips, men typically carry narrower hips and a flatter, firmer bottom. For patients undergoing transition, these differences are vital in order to create the desired silhouette for each gender. For these reasons it is crucial all patients seek the expertise of a board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon with the experience and artistic ability to create the gender-revealing profile for the bottoms that they desire. Let’s look more closely at the differences between both F2M and M2F buttock enhancement and reduction.

Enhancement

For patients seeking a more round, fuller and more feminine buttocks, there are various options to consider. One of the more popular procedures used for transitioning females is the Brazilian Butt Lift. This procedure has advanced quite a bit compared to butt enhancement via implants, which can prove more complicated. With the Brazilian Butt Lift, Dr. Adibfar carefully and safely  uses the patient’s own fat (retrieved from areas displaying excess fat) to inject into the buttocks and contour it for a more round, full and classically feminine silhouette. Excess fat is usually taken from areas such as the abdominals, hips and/or thighs, and because it is derived by the patient, guarantees little to no chance of rejection by the body. For patients with little body fat, implants may prove the optimal choice. While there have been horrific cases in the media of patients who’ve undergone botched buttock enhancement via implants, these cases are incredibly rare when performed by a qualified, board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon with experience performing the procedure.

Reduction

Buttock reduction surgery is usually performed on transgender patients transitioning to male. With these cases, contouring is typically carried out via liposuction. Liposuction in this area needs to be dealt with meticulously to assure symmetry and adequate fat removal without removing too much excess, as well as to transform a female’s curvy silhouette into one that resembles a more masculine shape emphasizing the patient’s shoulders and torso, rather than the lower body. So even though the goal of the procedure is to alter the buttock to make it more masculine looking, Dr. Adibfar understands that connected areas like the lower back, thighs and flanks need to be assessed in order to lend results that are seamless and emphasize a more balanced masculine shape. In many cases, transitioning males may also require a buttock lift to address any lax or sagging skin and tissue for more defined, natural-looking masculine buttocks.

Dr. Adibfar’s astute attention to detail and knowledge of key gender-revealing indicators has allowed for his transgender patients to achieve realistic results that achieve the desired shape they’re striving for. For delicate surgeries such as these, we always advise our patients to come into their initial consultation having done ample research on the topic so they feel more comfortable hearing the procedural details. Dr. Adibfar is always happy to answer all and any questions you may have about the surgery to help you decide whether this procedure is a right fit for you and your goals.
