Let’s talk about fat! We love it and hate it. We want it — and in many cases — we want to get rid of it. Fortunately, we can address both the fat we want and don’t want with a simple 1-2-punch procedure that will give you the curves you crave while removing the excess from pesky areas like the tummy and thighs. Is your butt naturally more square? Don’t fret. Your fat can be put to work, giving you a rounder, natural-looking backside that you’ve always wanted. Let’s take a closer look at fat grafting!

At Elements Spa, board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar and his experienced, highly-qualified and medically-trained team, refer to fat grafting as a combo procedure because it utilizes power-assisted liposuction and fat transfer. Power-assisted liposuction is efficient and incredibly safe (in fact, safer than traditional liposuction) because it’s less taxing on the tissues and requires less time. Essentially, power-assisted liposuction is performed using a cannula that produces minuscule concise vibrations to better separate and suction fatty tissue. This remarkable tool also allows for a quicker recovery time as more tissue is left intact leading to less damage and less bruising. [1]

Fat grafting refers to the use of our excess fat as a filler for areas that may be lacking in volume such as the buttocks. The primary benefit of grafting is that fat filler is a part of our body. That means that it will not create a reaction when redistributed which reduces the risk of inflammation and infection. Fat grafting to the buttocks involves adding volume to the lateral and central components of the butt equating to expansion of the entire anatomical area resulting in a powerful lift. And who wouldn’t want that, right?

Common areas where fat is harvested are the neck, arms, thighs, knees, calves, abdominals, flanks, and back. When adding fat to the buttocks, patients will typically request fat be removed from the abdominals and waist to accentuate a cinched[2] , more hourglass shape. Once the fat is removed, it is then purified from the patient’s blood, water, and oils to make injections more effective and allow the fat cells to thrive in their new location.

Dr. Adibfar uses the purified fat to carefully and accurately add volume to the buttocks. This involves injections as well as sculpting and contouring for optimal symmetrical projection. Dr. Adibfar will also rotate the patient on the surgical bed to see the body from various angles and to add definition and reduce any chance of visual irregularities. After full recovery, what remains is a prominent profile from all angles. Patients are left with a fuller, rounder buttocks and a more cinched waistline for an hourglass shape. While symmetry is an important factor, Dr. Adibfar also contours the body so that the redistributed fat results in a body that is designed proportionately and balanced.
