Summer is on the horizon and with warmer weather comes long hot days by the pool and sunny destinations. If you’re someone who has tried everything to get rid of a stubborn tummy and find that diet and exercise alone simply won’t make that excess budge, then a tummy tuck may be a great option for you! A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a very common and very popular procedure among patients and at Toronto’s Elements Spa, we’ve seen a rise in requests for this procedure because of its life-changing benefits.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck surgery is a body contouring procedure designed to slim your waistline and tighten your abdominal muscles while excess skin, fat, and stretch marks are surgically removed to permanently flatten your belly. The surgery can take up to three hours to complete and the length of your surgery depends on the size of your treatment area and whether any complimentary procedures are being performed alongside the abdominoplasty. Some complimentary procedures may include a thigh lift, body lift, and/or breast lift.

Who should get a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tucks are a great procedure for women, especially those seeking a mommy makeover,

who have had children but have some excess amount of skin and fat in the abdominal area. Pregnancy can also cause some widening of the abdominal muscles underneath and these can only be corrected via surgery.

How is a Tummy Tuck performed?

General anesthesia is used for this procedure so patients are asleep and completely comfortable during surgery. During the procedure, board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Adibfar tightens the underlying muscles by pulling them closer together to flatten the midsection via sutures. He will then proceed to remove any of the excess skin and fat with the help of power-assisted liposuction. Dr. Adibfar will make a well-hidden incision along your bikini line and a second incision around your belly button for its new location after your skin is pulled down.

Once the procedure is complete your incisions will be closed and bandages will be applied. Drainage tubes are also placed through tiny holes below the bikini line so fluids can escape as you heal. Your post-operative instructions will vary depending on your specific procedure and body and you will need to be conscious of resting during your recovery as a tummy tuck is a prominent procedure.

The Ideal Candidate for a Tummy Tuck

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is a healthy patient, who has maintained a stable weight for quite some time and carries realistic expectations for the surgery. Patients should also be non-smokers (or refrain from smoking) as well as should not be planning on getting pregnant.
