Every plastic surgery is unique. Patients of all ages and backgrounds come to our office with various concerns regarding individual problem areas and how to address them in the most effective way. In this article, we’ll be discussing what you can expect your recovery to be like after having had a major cosmetic plastic surgery procedure.

While one patient may have their surgery address their thighs, another may be undergoing a rhinoplasty or tummy tuck. All areas of the body heal distinctly to others, coming with their own unique self care and recovery instructions. And while it is difficult to say exactly what your recovery will be like without knowing your intended surgery, or you as an individual, it is safe and still helpful to relay general information about plastic surgery recovery so you better comprehend what to expect and whether you feel it is the right decision for you. Let’s get into more detail.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is invasive, which means it does a phenomenal job of addressing pressing physical insecurities or issues in a way that lends results that are long-lasting and at the heart of the issue. Because of this, patients should expect that their bodies will need adequate time (length depending on individual circumstance) to allow their bodies to acclimate, heal, bounce back and further progress with more noticeable beneficial results.

If you’re undergoing surgery on your face, chest or any part of the body that requires symmetry, the patient can expect that while some results will be noticeable immediately, the body will need time to heal from any bruising or swelling, as well as to return and settle into symmetry as scars begin to fade. Some areas can even take 6 months to one year to fully settle into their final position, so patients are urged to trust their board-certified plastic surgeon, aid the body in it’s healing and remain patient as definition in the area continues to improve daily.

Patients will typically always need to take time off from their work, social engagements and/or fitness routines to not only schedule the surgery, but to provide ample recovery time post-procedure to heal. Recovery times can be as little as 7 days (until returning to work) all the way up to 1-2 months. It really does depend on your occupation, your surgery and the required minimum amount of time it takes for your body to heal. Depending on your comfort level, you may be able to return to work earlier if cleared by your surgeon.

Recovery does mean rest, however that ‘rest’ does need to include some activity. While recovering, it’s important that your body gets some gentle activity (recommended by your surgeon) to ensure circulation—a vital component to your body’s healing mechanisms. Light walks and ensuring manageable mobility will lower any chance of blood clotting, as well as can greatly speed your recovery. Your surgeon’s prescribed pain medication will also help alleviate any discomfort as you heal and continue to remain mildly active.

An imperative part of your recovery is your communication with your surgeon. Your results will greatly depend on their skill, experience and history so please do your research.
