What To Expect From Your Rhinoplasty

Opting for a rhinoplasty is an exciting milestone moment in many of our patients’ lives. At Toronto’s Elements Spa, our board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar, finds that patients show up for rhinoplasties for numerous reasons. Some do not like the shape of their nose and would prefer to correct its shape, others may be opting for a rhinoplasty due to sports injury. Some patients undergo a rhinoplasty for both aesthetic reasons and to improve their breathing. For these reasons and more, we help patients achieve the results they’re looking for and restore their noses to a shape that best exemplifies the individual patient’s overall facial beauty and harmony.

What To Do Before Rhinoplasty Surgery

If you prove an ideal candidate, preparing for a rhinoplasty is vital to ensure the best possible outcome and a more swift recovery. You will be asked to eliminate any foods and medications that are likely to increase your chances of increased bleeding, bruising, and swelling during and after surgery. Some of the restricted items include alcohol, aspirin (and aspirin including products), and certain herbal supplements. Patients should also refrain from nicotine and caffeine as much as possible at least 2 weeks before surgery and after surgery. Maintaining well-hydrated levels to better tolerate the anesthesia and limit the possibility of excess swelling during and after surgery is also vital. Restricting sodium intake can also help reduce swelling during recovery.

On the day of surgery, patients are asked to refrain from eating 8 hours before surgery and are advised to show up for surgery in a button-down top to make it easy and efficient to get in and out of their surgical gown. Once the rhinoplasty is completed, Dr. Adibfar will supply each patient with their unique post-operative instructions.

What To Do After Rhinoplasty Surgery

To better manage the recovery period and ensure the best results possible, patients are asked to eat nutritious meals, maintain ample hydration levels, and refrain from exercise (aside from light walking and fresh air) for 2 weeks or until Dr. Adibfar clears them. Patients can naturally expect a lot of bruising and swelling in the nose with residual swelling that can last 6-12 months. Patients should pay special attention to taking their pain medications and antibiotics immediately after surgery to ensure less chance of infection and heal more swiftly.

After the initial splint comes off, patients can expect swelling and bruising to be present. Patients who adhere to Dr. Adibfar’s post-operative instructions closely have higher rates of success regarding smoother results and fewer chances of infection.
