What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a very common and pesky condition found in men of all ages. It essentially refers to men with chests that resemble a female’s. Men with gynecomastia have excess breast tissue which allows their chests to look less like a man, and more like a woman’s. This condition is usually a result of a hormonal imbalance or excess estrogen. However, it could also be due to other medical conditions and/or poor lifestyle choices.

The truth is, gynecomastia can happen to a man at any time of his life. Some men may notice a change in the shape of their chest in their more mature years of life—their 50s-60s— while others notice it early on in their 20s. The catalyst for gynecomastia is a disturbance in the ratio of testosterone and estrogen in a male’s body. A patient with gynecomastia doesn’t necessarily have low testosterone, however, the imbalance between testosterone and estrogen is apparent.

Fortunately, at Elements Spa, board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Adibfar can help return these men and their chests to a more masculine structure, contour, and shape. Let’s take a closer look at what this entails.

How does Gynecomastia Affect a Man?

Gynecomastia can be defined as abnormal enlargement of breast tissue in men and resolved via male breast reduction surgery. The goal is to deliver results that include a flatter and more toned chest, as well as the removal of any excess fat and skin and long-lasting results. As with all of his procedures, Dr. Adibfar creates a highly-individualized surgical plan to deliver results that are satisfying and resonate well with the patient’s natural bodily structures.

Gynecomastia is a fairly straightforward procedure. Dr. Adibfar begins by removing any excess using liposuction. Once the excess tissue is removed, Dr. Adibfar contours the breast and , if necessary, performs a minor nipple lift to assure the nipple placement is symmetrical and well-balanced with the breast. The incisions are usually simply around the areola and patients heal fairly quickly during recovery without many knowing that they had had a procedure at all!

The Benefits of a Gynecomastia Procedure

Patients who undergo a male breast reduction are always thrilled with their results and can feel a prominent shift in their psychology, confidence, and positive outlook on life. They feel freer to wear whatever clothing they like, as well as more comfortable in locker rooms, change rooms, and during summer weather when they frequent many pools and beaches. These patients love the look of their more chiseled and toned chest and can certainly feel a higher state of self-esteem, especially in social and romantic environments.

If you’re suffering from this condition and hate having to cover up or feel embarrassed by your body then this procedure may be the right life-changing procedure for you.
